  • 2023 Sale Topper Impresses on Debut

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
The Waterhouse-Bott stable is far and away the leading juvenile stable in Australia this season, however they appear to have another potential topliner. She is not, however, any ordinary 2YO. Sold for $2.6 million at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale from the draft of Widden Stud, Clean Energy was the most expensive yearling of her year and earned a fraction of her purchase price back when winning on debut at Warwick Farm on a Heavy9 track. A full-sister to exceptional filly Sunlight (Zoustar-Solar Charged, by Charge Forward), the valuable commodity scored by just under 2-lengths. Co-trainer Adrian Bott is optimistic about the future of the exciting prospect. Both he and jockey Adam Hyeronimus are confident that Clean Energy will perform even better on a dry track where she’ll get to show her full potential. After deciding to withdraw Clean Energy from the previous week's race at Canterbury, opting for Warwick Farm proved to be a successful strategy. "The track at Canterbury isn't the easiest for a debut, so we aimed to provide a more favorable first experience," explained Bott, who co-trains with Gai Waterhouse and spoke on Sky Thoroughbred Central. Hyeronimus, who has ridden several of the top juveniles for Waterhouse and Bott this season, praised Clean Energy's Wednesday performance. "She approached the gates and waited like a seasoned pro, despite it being her first race." Hyeronimus believes that Clean Energy has the potential to win a stakes race as a 2YO and improve further at three. According to punters.com.au, Bott mentioned that the Woodlands Stakes at Scone could be next for Clean Energy, but the Listed Bill Carter Stakes at Doomben on May 24 appears to be the preferred choice.

  • British Horseracing Changes Surface Rules

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) will allow racecourses to switch a meeting between turf and all-weather tracks if the original racing surface is deemed "unraceable" to prevent the meeting from being cancelled, reports bloodhorse.com. "Following the abandonment of a Lingfield turf fixture in 2022, questions were raised by connections as to whether there could be a process in place to allow the affected races to simply transfer to the All-Weather course for those still willing to race, especially with participants and racegoers having already travelled to the course," said Tom Byrne, BHA's Head of Racing and Betting. "By introducing this new policy, we hope that if we are faced with a similar situation again, a switch of race surface on the day of the race would be permitted, allowing the fixture to continue, rather than being abandoned." Byrne emphasised, "We expect that any such instance will be very rare, with an on-the-day switch only permitted in the most exceptional circumstances. However, if the need does arise, then we give ourselves the chance to try and fairly deliver races for participants who want to run, as well as offering racing for customers both on and off-course."
  • Miller and Amelia's Jewel Prepare to Part Ways

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Perth trainer Simon Miller often has referred to his super mare Amelia's Jewel as his Ferrari, reports rwwa.com.au. Come Saturday, Miller will have to hand over the keys to his Ferrari as one of Australian racing's successful partnerships draws to a classy exit. After 15 starts, nine wins, four seconds, $3,426,050 in prizemoney, one Group 1, three Group 2s, two Group 3s and two Listed victories, Segenhoe Stud-reared Amelia's Jewel (Siyouni-Bumbasina, by Canford Cliffs) will run her final race for Miller in the Gr1 Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide before she commences the next phase of her career under Annabel Neasham in Sydney. Amelia's Jewel is the most gifted horse Miller has trained and there is no doubt he would love to go out on a high and claim his second win at the elite level. Despite sentimentality and emotion surrounding Amelia's Jewel's final race under his care, Miller says it will be business as usual and he will be treating the race as any other. "I'm just focused on getting it right for Saturday and hope to go out with a bang. It's business as usual, there might be reflection when the dust settles. It's all about rolling up and having fun and just enjoying it," Miller told The Races WA. Miller's hopes of a midfield draw were answered with Amelia's Jewel to jump from barrier nine in the $1 million Goodwood. She faces 16 rivals and will be ridden by champion hoop Damian Lane.

  • Million Dollar Maiden Series Announced For NZ

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Horses who are eligible for the Karaka Millions Series will race for an additional $1m in bonuses with a new maiden series announced by New Zealand Bloodstock. The Karaka Millions Mega Maiden Series is an initiative created by NZB and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and is supported by Entain. Each season, 40 maiden races will see an additional $1 million in bonuses and the series is guaranteed for the next three years. Each of the 40 races are non-Saturday maidens and any Karaka Millions eligible horse, 3YO+, will win a $25,000 bonus. "By hosting a $1m maiden series over 40 races, that goal (of seeing more sales graduates benefit from the Karaka Millions) will be well and truly satisfied," NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook said. "I'd like to thank Bruce Sharrock, Cameron George and the NZTR Board for their continued support of NZB and the Karaka Millions Series. Because of NZTR's financial contribution, we were able to raise the TAB Karaka Millions 3YO to $1.5m this year which in turn led to a much larger uptake in nominations." He noted, "As a result of that we are now able to introduce this new maiden series, which will get to the grass roots of racing in this country. I'd also like to thank Dean Shannon, Lachlan Fitt, Cameron Rodger and their wider team, whose contribution to this new initiative underscores Entain's desire to see our industry thrive at every level." NZTR will announce the 40 eligible races next week and they will begin from September 2024 for the 2024/25 season. "This is a great initiative that we envisage will boost field sizes across the country," Entain Australia and New Zealand Managing Director – New Zealand, Cameron Rodger said. "Having $25,000 worth of bonuses to chase in a maiden race will undoubtedly encourage Kiwi owners and trainers to keep striving for that maiden win. This series, as well as series like the Entain NZB Insurance Pearl Series, means there are more bonus opportunities for more horses in New Zealand than ever before."
  • Gentileschi Stands Out to Paul Messara

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
It is often a juggling act to combine his dual roles of Arrowfield Stud general manager while also training a string of horses, but Paul Messara has the balance spot-on judging by recent results, reports racingqueensland.com.au. Oaks-bound filly Gentileschi is the latest talent on Paul Messara's books. Trained by Messara in partnership with Leah Gavranich, Gentileschi (Dundeel-Artefiori, by  showed an impressive turn of foot to sweep down the outside and triumph in the Highway Handicap (1500m) at Hawkesbury on Saturday, her third win in succession. The victory cemented her passage to Brisbane where she will line up in the Gr2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 25 as an audition for the Queensland Oaks (2200m) a fortnight later. "I've always thought she'd get 2000 metres and I've been looking forward to getting her out to that trip. I'd like to see her ridden cold and hitting the line like that in a couple of weeks' time," said Messara. He can see characteristics from the sire and dam sides of the family, believing Gentileschi has inherited the best from both. "She looks a lot like the old boy, certainly more so than the mother. But she's got a turn of foot like the mum's (side), so it has been a lovely cross."

  • Melbourne Raid for In Form Tassie Duo

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Trainer Glenn Stevenson from Wesley Vale has established a commanding three-win lead in the Tasmanian Trainers’ Premiership, with a total of 48 wins this season. This weekend, he is set to compete interstate with two standout performers, First Accused and Stone Cold Stunner, who have collectively notched nine victories in the 23/24 season. According to tasracing.com.au, they are slated to race at Caulfield on Saturday. First Accused has demonstrated significant form, claiming victories in the Newmarket Handicap and Tasmanian Stakes, both Listed races, which positions him as a strong contender for the Ladbrokes Horse of the Year title in his home state. Stevenson has secured a 1400m benchmark 100 race for First Accused's seasonal debut. Despite not normally excelling in training, First Accused impressed in a recent trial in Devonport on April 23. The trainer plans a midfield strategy for him, hoping for a favorable starting position to leverage the anticipated race pace. Stone Cold Stunner, a 4-year-old mare, began her career in Victoria in the then Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable. Having joined Stevenson as a maiden after four starts, she has since achieved seven victories. She returns to Victoria for a 1400m benchmark 78 race for fillies and mares, a race offering an opportunity for country trainers to progress to the country final. Both horses will be ridden by Codi Jordan after travelling to Melbourne on Wednesday.
  • Impendabelle Takes on Open Kiwi Company

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Talented 3YO Impendabelle (Impending-Applegate, by Exceed And Excel) will step out of age group company for the first time in her season's grand final on Saturday at Arawa Park, reports racingnews.co.nz. Impendabelle has been a model of consistency this term, with success in the Gr2 Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) headlining a campaign that included a pair of Group 1 placings in the Levin Classic (1600m) and New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m). Tony Pike, who prepares Impendabelle out of Cambridge, gave the filly a brief spell through the early autumn and she added further black-type to her page first-up in the Gr3 Cambridge Breeders' Stakes (1200m). Pike indicated her last contest of a successful season would come in Saturday's Gr3 Rotorua Stakes (1400m), where she will benefit from weight-for-age conditions. "She went well running third fresh-up in the Cambridge Breeders', she'll take plenty of improvement from that with the step-up to 1400 definitely being an advantage," Pike said. "This will be her last run for her 3YO season, she's been super consistent all the way through. She obviously comes up against the older horses, but she's had a great season and it would be great to cap it off with a win on Saturday."

  • Fresh Chapter for WA's Yarradale Stud

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Yarradale Stud, led by owner Lyn Sayers and stud manager Davy Hanratty, is poised for revitalisation at the upcoming Magic Millions National Sale on the Gold Coast. This marks a fresh chapter for the Gidgegannup farm, particularly after a deliberate reduction in livestock numbers following Ron Sayers' passing in May 2022. Hanratty expressed optimism about the stud's future, citing excellent facilities and professional team management. He highlighted their recent success at the Perth Magic Millions, where they achieved a record gross of $2.28 million, and sold a top-priced Brazen Beau colt for $375,000 to China Horse Club. Sayers and Hanratty plan to purchase high-quality young commercial mares and possibly a new stallion over the next year, emphasizing quality over quantity. Meanwhile, the stud's resident stallion Gingerbread Man continues to excel, producing recent Ascot winners like Enchanting Sound, Spice is Right, and Born And Bread. His leading performer Red Can Man recently placed again at Group 3 level in the Northam Stakes. The stud has also celebrated successes with horses such as Malkar Pindari, Lexington City, Storm Chaser, and Wuban Gold. Another notable runner, Valour Road, is preparing for his next campaign following a Belmont trial win. Among the promising newcomers, the unraced 3YO Last Stylebender, a first foal from Saturia by War Chant, impressed with two trial wins at Belmont last month. After selling for $100,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions, Yarradale retained a share in him. Gingerbread Man is available for breeding this season at a service fee of $5,500, including GST.
  • Italian Jockey Atzeni Relishing Hong Kong Lifestyle

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
After 16 years based in Britain, jockey Andrea Atzeni is enjoying his new routine in Hong Kong, reports scmp.com. "Overall, I think life as a jockey in the UK is physically a lot more demanding as you race a lot more, you spend hours in the car and so your body suffers," said Atzeni. "In the UK, once the season starts at the end of March until the first week in November, it's basically non-stop racing. That's one of the huge differences. We would race most days compared to here in Hong Kong, where we race two days a week, so you have a lot more time for yourself." Atzeni claimed, "The recovery side is huge. Because in Hong Kong you race usually on Wednesdays and Sundays, you can get into a routine and you have time to recover, whereas in the UK, there is no routine whatsoever because we spend most of our time travelling". On the flip side, the Italian-born jockey noted that there are still challenges. They include more horses racing in Hong Kong carrying less weight, and jockeys having to book their own rides." Atzeni revealed, "I now walk around four pounds lighter than when I was racing back in the UK." He says that, mentally, Hong Kong is a lot more challenging."

  • City Of Troy Still on Track for Epsom Derby

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Trainer Aidan O'Brien blamed himself for City Of Troy (Justify-Together Forever, by Galileo) poor showing in the Gr1 Two Thousand Guineas over the weekend and says the colt is still on track for the Gr1 Epsom Derby, according to timeform.com. "Maybe I left him too fresh, because he went into the stalls and reared up and when he hit the ground they let him go straight away," said O'Brien. "Usually what would happen when they'd rear up like that their heart rate would rise, but they'd usually get a second when they let them go back before they set off. But he went in, got upset and then 'bang', out straight away. His heart was probably very high, what happens usually those horses usually get into the red zone a lot quicker than they should. So probably he was in the red zone before halfway, so I'd say that's what happened. But because I'd left him too fresh, I was probably too easy on him and left him too fresh." Last year's Champion 2YO, City Of Troy was sent out as favourite for the Guineas but faded to ninth. "He'll stay on the same path, you often miss the first one but we'll just put a line through it," continued O'Brien. "He'll go for the Derby, that's the pattern he was going and that's the way he'll go."
  • Winter Carnival Ruled out for Overpass

    Thursday, 9th May 2024
Dual The Quokka winner Overpass (Vancouver) is out for the season after a recent fever disrupted plans to compete in the $1.5 million Doomben 10,000 in Queensland later this month. After being missing from the initial nominations for the Queensland Group 1 feature trainer Bjorn Baker confirmed to punters.com.au that Overpass has been moved to the spelling paddock and won’t be seen again until the spring. Baker expressed his disappointment, stating, "He just had a temperature last week. It's obviously disappointing he can't participate in the Doomben 10,000. We were looking forward to it but now our focus shifts to the spring season. He seems to be recuperating well, so we're not overly concerned. We'll ensure he rests fully and returns in top form." Overpass, a five-year-old gelding, finished second to Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) in the Doomben 10,000 last year, and was a leading early favourite for this year's race scheduled for May 18. Earlier this season, he defended his title at The Quokka in Ascot, boosting his career earnings to over $7.7 million after clinching the $5 million feature event. Baker revealed plans to target The Everest this spring, potentially providing Overpass with a third attempt at the prestigious race. "We hope to make it back to The Everest, possibly starting there, or we might opt for the Sydney Stakes or explore a few options in Melbourne. We may also consider the Winterbottom later on.” Overpass remains undefeated in Perth, having won last year’s last December’s Winterbottom to claim his inaugural Group 1 victory.
