  • Well Travelled Mella Maria Etched in History

    Tuesday, 6th April 2021

At the time that she raced, Australian-bred Mella Maria (Star Witness-Sayahailmary, by Keepthefaith) would have been well off the radar of most Australian pedigree enthusiasts despite being out of well-named Gr2 Angus Armanasco runner-up Sayahailmary. Knocked down for a bargain at the 2014 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale to gifted South African trainer Mike Azzie from the draft of Widden Stud, Mella Maria belied her price by winning the Gr2 Johannesburg Fillies and Mares Challenge S. and placing twice at Group 3 level. Fast forward seven years and back in Australia, she has the privilege of being the dam of the last ever Redoute’s Choice yearling to be catalogued sold at public auction. Lot 418, consigned by Fernrigg Farm at Inglis Easter, is one of seven yearlings to go under the hammer on Tuesday and Wednesday by Redoute’s Choice (Danehill-Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad) whose redoubtable statistics put him into that tiny echelon of truly elite stallions. Even though his name will live on for ever via his ever-growing representation by his sire-sons and their offspring, as well as through his daughters and their respective produce, the sale of Mella Maria’s filly at approximately 3.22pm on Wednesdayat Riverside will see the drawing of a curtain that will be deeply felt at Arrowfield Stud.
