  • Successful Championships Day Repeat Likely

    Tuesday, 13th April 2021

The prospect of 25 degrees and some scattered showers in Sydney on Saturday augurs well for the Australian Turf Club’s climatic Day-2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick. It follows brilliant autumn sunshine for last weekend’s eighth running of The Star Championships at the city track where the ATC reported a sold-out crowd on hand for what was a fantastic 10-race card. The Club’s chief executive, Jamie Barkley, said Sydney had returned to the races in great numbers. “Derby and Doncaster Day is a favourite of Sydney and it’s a time for the city to shine in autumn… With the new Winx Stand well under way and new spaces across the racecourse, the atmosphere at Royal Randwick has been as vibrant as ever.” Next Saturday’s Day 2 of The Championships will feature the much-anticipated return battle between top class gallopers Verry Elleegant (Zed) and Addeybb (Pivotal) in the $4 million Gr1 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), as well as renewals of the Gr1 Australian Oaks (2400m), Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) and Gr1 Queen of the Turf Stakes (1600m).
