  • Darryl Gollan Memorial A Chance for Reflection

    Wednesday, 14th April 2021

Trainer Tony Gollan believes this Friday's Darryl Gollan Memorial Raceday at Clifford Park will be a good chance to reflect on his father's contribution to racing, reports queenslandracing.com.au. Darryl Gollan passed away aged 76 in April 2020 following an illness. "There has been a lot of milestones I have reached when he was alive that I did not think I would, but to get another Group 1 not long after his passing, it just shows that the show needs to keep going on and do your job," Tony Gollan said. "Hopefully he was looking down and proud of me getting the Group 1. I felt he was there at Rosehill the other day in spirit for me and helped me out all the way." The win by Krone (Eurozone-Soft Landing, by Al Maher) in the Gr1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens was the first at elite level for multiple Queensland Metro champion trainer Tony Gollan since 2014 when Spirit of Boom (Sequalo-Temple Spirit, by Special Dane) won the Gr1 Doomben 10,000. "He was my best friend and I did not need him to pee in my pocket and tell me how good I was," said Gollan. "As a son, you always strive to have your father to be proud of you and what you are achieving. He was always quick to give me a clip when he thought I was not doing things right or working to my potential." Gollan added, "My father got the best out of me as far as my career and my training; I owe everything to him, I would not be here with my stable and horses now without him in my life. He kept me honest, he was an exceptionally hard worker and was frank with me, but I am sure he is proud of me."
