  • Group 1 Gold Becoming a Habit

    Monday, 17th May 2021

The expression, Once is a mistake, twice is a pattern, three times is a habit, could well be applied to Inglis’ Melbourne Gold Yearling. The sale, whose two-day 2021 renewal got underway yesterday at Oaklands (see report above), celebrated a remarkable third individual 2020-21 Group 1 winner over the weekend when $8,000 yearling purchase Savatoxl (Kuroshio- Li'l Miss Hayley, by Savabeel) won South Australia’s greatest race, the G1 Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville. In a dominant performance, Savatoxl was a comfortable 2-length victor, leaving some of Australia’s best sprinters in his wake including Group 1 winners Gytrash (Lope de Vega), Behemoth (All Too Hard) and Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt). Savatoxl’s elite success replicated the efforts in the past three months of Australian Guineas winner Lunar Fox ($40,000 purchase) and Australasian Oaks victor Media Award ($5,000 buy). Bred by Mark and Sheryl Atkinson’s Carrington Park Stud, Savatoxl was purchased by the Alice Springs Turf Club at the 2017 Gold Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Stonehouse Thoroughbreds. It was a first yearling-sold Group 1 winner for Ryan Arnel of Stonehouse, who also sold Victoria Derby victor Extra Brut as a weanling. Savatoxl (pictured) has now won a staggering 16 of his 28 starts for $725,000 in earnings. To view the Gold Yearling Sale catalogue, CLICK HERE.
