  • Candy Man Future Remains Unclear

    Tuesday, 10th August 2021

Whether they’re quirky, talented, or both, grey horses often develop a cult following. Although not in the class of Chautauqua, The Candy Man is one of Queensland’s favourite performers, however the future of the now 8YO remains up in the air. His talent aside, the son of Vinery Stud’s Casino Prince, became famous initially after he returned from a mammoth operation to repair a shattered jaw five years ago. Letting his ability do the talking thereafter, The Candy Man has been recovering from throat surgery following a disappointing winter carnival in his home state. According to racenet.com.au, the almost white grey now has to undergo a ‘clean-up’ procedure following his latest operation. Trainer Barry Baldwin seems confident the gelding should be fine, but acknowledges he may not race again, stating, “We will put him back into work when we can after his recuperation then into trackwork but there is no guarantee he will race again – we need to take it real steady with him… The horse comes first so it will be week by week or month by month. He’s been a marvellous horse for us, he has always put in so we have to do the right thing by him.” Group winner The Candy Man, who at one stage put together a seven-win picket fence, has earned connections over half a million dollars.
