Seventeen Black Type races into the new racing season, and 51 individual horses are already on the Black Type Premiership scoreboard for 2021-22. Last season there were 968 individual runners who earned points. Having collected 13 points for last Saturday’s impressive Gr1 Winx Stakes, Mo’unga (Savabeel-Chandelier, by O’Reilly) has taken the early lead. He is followed by last season’s Black Type Horse of the Year Verry Elleegant (Zed-Opulence, by Danroad) on 11. Hard on her heels are four runners sharing joint third with 10 points: Phobetor (Dream Ahead-Oneforall, by Dubai Destination), She’s Ideel (Dundeel-Anna’s Mail by Anabaa), Sierra Sue (Darci Brahma-Centree, by Centaine) and Swift Witness (Star Witness-Taylors Command, by Commands). Corroborating just how tough the BTP competition is, despite winning last season’s Gr1 Rosehill Guineas, finishing runner-up in the Gr1 Randwick Guineas, winning the Listed Dulcify and placing in the Gr3 Colin Hayes Stakes, Mo’Unga’s 32 points saw him finish joint eighteenth in the 3YO category, joint twenty-eighth in the Male category, and forty-fifth overall.
