  • Solario Winner Set To Reach For The Derby

    Tuesday, 24th August 2021

In the most fortuitous fashion, worlds are set to collide next year with the growing likelihood that the Queen's Platinum Jubilee will be graced by her own  Epsom Derby representative, reports theguardian.com. The script became even more realistic at Sandown Park on Saturday when Reach For The Moon (Sea The Stars-Golden Stream, by Sadler's Wells), bred by Her Majesty, saluted stylishly in the Gr3 Solario Stakes and was wound in to 14-1 for next year's classic. In fact, the only colt more fancied than Reach For The Stars at this point is the Aiden O'Brien trained Point Lonsdale (Australia-Sweepstake, by Acclamation). Sent out a prohibitive 2-5 favourite for the Solario, and partnered by Champion hoop Frankie Dettori, Reach For The Moon accelerated nicely and won eased down by four lengths, earning high praise from Dettori, "He was quite babyish at the beginning of his career [but] with racing he is getting better and better. Today, he stopped his antics a little bit and he was focusing better. He has got a good size, a wonderful stride and he has got gears. He's a very exciting prospect." Trainer John Gosden also heaped praise on his emerging colt, "We feel like the more he is racing the better he is getting, so I suspect you will see him out a couple more times before the end of the season. I suspect the [Group 1] Dewhurst [at Newmarket on 9 October] could be the plan." History is also on the side of Reach For The Moon, with recent previous Solario winners Masar (2017), Kingman (2013) and Too Darn Hot (2018) all successful in the following year's Derby.
