  • UK Sunday Evening Racing on the Backburner

The British Horseracing Authority has decided against implementing Sunday evening racing following an unsuccessful trial period, reports timeform.com. Conducted between January and March, six all-weather meetings were held with pre-established turnover targets to gauge the feasibility of the venture. Despite each meeting offering a substantial prize pool of at least £145,000 and attracting an average field size of over 10 runners, the initiative faced significant challenges. Notably, the concept faced criticism from jockeys, staff, and trainers, while betting interest remained insufficient. Bookmakers reported a three percent decline in turnover compared to midweek floodlit fixtures. In light of this feedback and the trial's outcomes, the BHA board chose not to proceed with further pilot fixtures. Joe Saumarez Smith, the BHA chair, acknowledged the lessons learned from the trial but emphasised the complexities of making decisions based on a limited sample size. Despite the setbacks, there was recognition of the potential for Sunday evening racing, with the board expressing interest in a more extensive trial if future circumstances permit. Smith highlighted the need for patience in embracing new concepts, particularly considering the necessary behavioral changes within the betting public.
