  • Inverloch Attempts Weight Record in Cup

    Thursday, 17th June 2021

If Inverloch (Fastnet Rock-Ideal, by Galileo) is to win Saturday's Listed Ipswich Cup, the 6YO gelding will need to break a 60-year-old weight carrying record, reports racingqueensland.com.au. The imported galloper has won nine of his 36 starts, including the Listed Wagga Wagga Cup two starts ago and will carry 60.5kg. First run in 1935, the Ipswich Cup weight-carrying record was set by Sharply (EdwardsII-Spritely, by Fresco) at 58.5kgs when he won in 1961. "Records are there to be broken," said Trent Bussutin, who co-trains with Natalie Young. "I was hoping something would be nominated above him in the ratings so he'd get a lighter weight but it didn't happen. It's not ideal but he's earned his big weight." Bussutin isn't worried about Inverloch's last start last placing. "He won the Wagga Cup well but then had a month between runs and had a minor setback before the Winter Stakes," Busuttin said. "The Winter Cup was over 2400 metres which is right at the top of his limit. He ran below par in the Winter Stakes but he'll run some sort of a race in the Ipswich Cup if he runs up to his best form." Inverloch won two of his first six starts in France in 2017 before heading to Australia, and he didn't race here until March 2019, whereafter he's won on another seven occasions.
